Why USDC is worth about one dollar
USDC is a stablecoin issued by Circle. Each token is backed by reserves held in cash and short-term US government bonds, and Circle redeems USDC for dollars one-for-one for its business customers. That redemption promise keeps the market price very close to $1.00: small moves like $0.9998 or $1.0002 are normal trading noise. It isn't guaranteed, though. In March 2023, when part of Circle's reserves was held at the failing Silicon Valley Bank, USDC briefly traded around $0.87 before recovering within days.
How to turn USDC into money in your bank
- Send the USDC to an exchange account that supports withdrawals to your bank, on a network the exchange accepts, such as Base, Ethereum or Solana. Check the network before sending.
- Convert or sell the USDC for your currency. Many exchanges convert USDC to US dollars at or very close to 1:1, but check the trading and conversion fees.
- Withdraw to your bank. Withdrawal fees and timing vary by exchange and country.
You pay a small network fee to move the USDC, usually cents on networks like Base or Polygon. Or keep it as USDC if you'll spend or pay suppliers in stablecoins anyway.
Getting paid in USDC
If a client wants to pay in USDC, send an invoice priced in dollars with the crypto invoice generator. A USD invoice paid in USDC converts exactly 1:1, so the amount never moves between sending the invoice and getting paid. Payment goes straight from their wallet to yours with no RivitPay fee. Compare what other ways of getting paid cost with the PayPal fee calculator.
Records and tax
In the US, USDC you receive for work is income at its dollar value on the day you receive it, which for USDC is almost exactly the invoice amount. Converting it to dollars later usually creates little or no gain or loss, but it's still a transaction to record. Keep the invoice and the transaction hash together. The self-employment tax calculator estimates what to set aside.
