What net 30 means
Net 30 means the full amount of the invoice is due 30 days after the invoice date. "Net" is the total after any discounts. You count calendar days, including weekends and holidays, starting the day after the invoice date. So an invoice dated September 28 on net 30 terms is due October 28. Net 7, net 15 and net 60 work the same way with a different number of days.
Common payment terms
| Terms | When payment is due |
|---|---|
| Due on receipt | As soon as the client receives the invoice |
| Net 7, 14, 15 | 7, 14 or 15 days after the invoice date: common for freelancers and small jobs |
| Net 30 | 30 days after the invoice date: the default for many businesses |
| Net 45, 60, 90 | 45, 60 or 90 days: typical of large companies and agencies |
| EOM | The last day of the month the invoice is dated |
| 15 MFI | The 15th of the month following the invoice |
| 2/10 net 30 | 2% off if paid within 10 days, otherwise the full amount in 30 |
Early-payment discounts
A term like 2/10 net 30 offers the client 2% off if they pay within 10 days, with the full amount due at 30. On a $2,000 invoice, paying $1,960 by day 10 saves the client $40. Discounts can speed up payment from clients who watch their cash, but they come straight out of your margin. Many freelancers get the same effect by simply using shorter terms, since nobody actually pays in 30 days anyway.
Late fees
A late fee should be in your terms before the work starts and printed on the invoice, for example "Late payments accrue 1.5% per month". Adding one afterwards is hard to enforce. Fees of 1% to 1.5% a month, or a flat fee, are common, but many US states limit how much interest you can charge, so check your state's rules. Some places now back freelancers by law: your unpaid invoice might have a law behind it.
Put the terms on the invoice
A real due date on the invoice gets paid faster than a term the client has to work out. The free invoice generator prints the due date and your terms. A free RivitPay account sends reminders before and after the due date, so you don't have to chase.
Frequently asked questions
What does net 30 mean on an invoice?
Net 30 means the full invoice amount is due 30 days after the invoice date. For example, an invoice dated September 28 on net 30 terms is due October 28.
How do you calculate a net 30 due date?
Add 30 calendar days to the invoice date, counting from the day after it. Weekends and holidays count unless your contract says business days. The calculator does this for any payment terms.
Does net 30 include weekends?
Yes. Net 30 counts calendar days, so weekends and holidays are included. If the due date lands on a weekend, many businesses pay on the next business day, and the calculator can show that date.
What does 2/10 net 30 mean?
The client can take 2% off if they pay within 10 days of the invoice date. Otherwise the full amount is due within 30 days.
How much can I charge as a late fee?
Fees of 1% to 1.5% of the balance per month, or a flat fee, are common. They should be agreed in advance and shown on the invoice, and many US states cap interest rates, so check your state's rules.
